What is Pilates?

Pilates is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises, conditioning the body and engaging the mind. Its balanced blend of strength and flexibility improves posture, coordination, balance, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates works the smaller muscle groups that help stabilise the joints to aid in injury prevention, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilising the core and focusing on breathing technique.

Can anyone do Pilates?

Pilates is beneficial for people of all ages, fitness levels and body conditions. At Emergy, we like to think of Pilates as a bridge between physical fitness and physical therapy. It can be adapted, modified and customised for individual needs. Some advanced moves and sequences will challenge the most elite athlete while other exercises are suitable for even the frailest physique.

I have never done Pilates before – where do I start?

If you are new to Pilates, we advise that you take one or two introductory Private sessions before entering Group classes. In the initial session you will learn the principles and techniques of Pilates, enabling you to get the most out of your classes. You will also receive an introduction to the Reformer machine and a postural assessment.

If you have any injuries the private sessions allow you to discuss the details with your instructor who can then recommend modifications to exercises if necessary before joining a group class.

I have done Pilates Mat before— do I still need to do an introductory session?

It is advisable to ensure you fully understand the important principles of Pilates.
If you plan to join a Reformer class you will definitely require an Introductory session as Mat Pilates experience is not enough knowledge for you to get the most out of your Reformer class.

I haven’t worked out for a long time—is Pilates still safe for me to try?

Our instructors will offer modifications to many exercises and encourage you to workout at your own pace and it’s ok to take a break if you need to.

How often do I need to do Pilates to see results?

Some of our clients visit once a week and some like to see us four times! It’s up to you how often you practice Pilates, however our recommendation to see results is at least two or three times a week.

Joseph Pilates famously said: “In 10 classes you will feel the difference, In 20 classes you will see the difference, and in 30 classes you will have a whole new body.”

It is also important to maintain a proper diet and engage in other activities such as cardio.

What if I have back problems and or another type of injury?

Developing strong core muscles can definitely help improve back problems. Many people find Pilates is an excellent choice for preventing or managing existing injuries. A few private sessions are recommended before entering into classes if you have injuries.

I want to lose weight — will Pilates help?

You will be building and toning your muscles and muscles continue to burn calories, even after you have finished the class. Sometimes our classes incorporate an element of cardio to help get your heart rate up. Our Xtend Barre workout is the best choice of class for weight loss as it is always more cardio based. With a healthy diet and a good mix of classes, you can definitely lose weight.

Will I get individual attention?

Yes, with a maximum of 5-6 people in Reformer classes and a maximum 6-9 in Mat classes, the instructors can correct you on almost all exercises and suggest modifications specifically for you if necessary.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable workout clothes for ease of movement.
